A Study on the Practice of Barrier Technics among Dental Personnels in Taegu City

Kwon Tae-Geon
Abstract
Objectives : The purposes of this study were to investigate the self-reported concerns about general health, use of the hepatitis B vaccine, use of personal barrier procedures by dental personnels in Taegu city, Korea.

Methods : Informations was obtained with a mailed questionnaires sent to 300 private practices. Surveys were received from 184 dentists, 112 dental hygienists and 46 dental assistants.

Results : About 63% of dental personnels had been immunized against Hepatitis B virus. 91.5% of dentists responded they took the medical history of patients. 88.70% of dentists, 12.50% of dental hygienists routinely use the mask for treating all patients. Reported use of surgical gloves (4.5%) and protective eyewear (13.6%) with all patients was extremely low in every group. Dentists still reuse injection needle (2.8%) and lidocaine cartridge (17.0%).
Conclusion : Dental personnels were not properly immunized against Hepatitis B virus. The ratio of using basic barrier technics were low in every group. There still exists the possibility of transmission of blood bone infection due to reuse of injection needle and lidocaine cartridge. It is necessary to establish specific regulations or recommendations about cross infection control in Korea, and then inform all dental health care workers about these issues.
